What to Do If You Crack or Chip a Tooth?

Injuries, accidents and emergencies can happen to your mouth just like any other part of the body. If a dental emergency strikes your household, it’s important to act fast yet keep calm.

If you or your child suffers a cracked or fractured tooth that causes pain, you should contact our office immediately so we can help advise you on the best course of action. In some cases you might chip or fracture a tooth in a way that only damages the enamel without pain. If there is no pain you can sometimes wait until the next available appointment.

If you don’t immediately have access to a phone and you are experience pain in the tooth in question there are a few steps you can take.

First try to rinse that area of your mouth with lukewarm salt water. You should then place a cold compress on that side of your face. You can make a cold compress by placing ice in a zip-top bag wrapped in a washcloth or tea towel. You can then hold it to your face for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Deep breathing can also help lower your blood pressure and reduce anxiety which can heighten pain. Inhale deeply through your nose then exhale slowly out your mouth.
