The Enemies of the Mouth

Posted .

If you want a top-notch smile and oral health, then you need to avoid the enemies of the mouth. Those enemies include plaque and acid. To tell you a little more about these enemies, our dentist, Dr. Bill Cryderman, is happy to share some information with you.

Plaque
This is the biggest rival to the mouth. It’s a sticky, hard-to-see film that clings to the surfaces of the teeth. There are two types of plaque: Plaque that causes cavities and plaque that causes gum disease. The plaque that causes cavities thrive off the sugar and carbohydrates you consume and create acid. That acid attacks the teeth and creates holes in the surface, which are cavities. The plaque that causes gum disease turns into a toxic substance called tartar. Tartar irritates the gums, creates pockets of infection, and deteriorates the underlying bone.

You need to keep plaque away from the teeth and gums by keeping up on oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly.

Acid
Acid from the foods and drinks you consume can harm your tooth enamel. This is because it attacks the outer shell and wears it down. This is called enamel erosion. When this happens, the teeth are vulnerable to cavities and tooth damage, like chips and breaks. It’s best to avoid the effects of acid by staying away from acidic foods and beverages.
