At the holistic dental practice of Dr. Bill Cryderman, we are pleased to help our patients in Calgary, Alberta, with all of their dental needs, including the treatment of TMJ. What do you know about TMJ and how it affects your oral health?
The joint which connects your jaw to your skull is known as the temporomandibular joint. If it is somehow injured, it can cause pain known as TMJ syndrome. TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors such as chewing gum excessively, poor posture, stress, misalignment of the jaw, teeth grinding by day or night, tooth injury or injury to the jaw.
The result of TMJ on your health can include pain the joints of the jaw, clicking and popping of the jaw, pain in the ears, ear popping, dizziness or vertigo, headaches or migraines, sore or even stiff jaw muscles, pain in your temple, and possibly the locking of your jaw.
But take heart, there is relief. You can place ice packs on the joint, reduce your stress, incorporate massages and stretches, and avoid chewing gum until your jaws heal. Depending on the cause and severity of your TMJ, we may also recommend the following:
— A mouthguard or nightguard to alleviate teeth grinding.
— Medications such as muscle relaxers, or anti-inflammatory drugs which can help your jaw.
— Physical therapy which includes exercises for the jaw.
— Jaw surgery.
